Beowulf is one of the most well known pieces of literature in history. Written between 700 and 1000 AD, this poem has captured the minds of scholars, historians, and readers across the globe. However, despite the fact that it has been passed down for numerous centuries, perhaps one of its most fascinating characteristics are the intriguing battles that Beowulf, the protagonist, takes on. Throughout this epic poem, Beowulf takes on many battles, all of which are practically unwinnable. Each battle presents new obstacles for Beowulf and his men as they tackle the unthinkable. Despite the fact that the odds are turned against him, he musters up all of his strength and bravery to achieve the impossible. Through this poem, he fights Grendel, a demon from the swamp. He also fights Grendel’s mother, who approaches Beowulf craving revenge from the Danes. Lastly, he fights a dragon, who becomes angry when his treasure is stolen. Each of Beowulf’s battles provide elements that de fine Beowulf and shape him into being a different person. Fear, courage, honor, and strength all play a large part in the battles that Beowulf fights. Two of the most similar battles are the two between Grendel and his mother. Each of these battles gave Beowulf two of the most triumphant victories of his lifetime. When one looks into further detail, it is clear that these battles are very similar. Sin is like an open sore that if left to fester will continue to grow worse not improve. Nathaniel Hawthorne examines this concept, as he seeks to connect with his reader. Many of his works revolve around a theme of sin and the effects it has on the mind, body, and soul. Sin is one of those permeating areas that has lasting consequences that affect all of life. Many characters in Hawthorne’s works go through their lives struggling as they try to cope with the guilt and shame associated with their actions. Some try to conceal their sin in order to avoid the consequences that will result, while others are seen outwardly suffering the consequences of their actions. Both The Ministers Black Veil and Young Goodman Brown are cases in point. Some characters make the choice to conceal their sin, while others have that choice taken from them. When trying to understand his characters and some of the presuppositions that Hawthorne brings to the table, it is interesting to note that he utilizes Puritanism in many of his writings. The reader catches a glimpse of his struggle as he tries to fit together the seemly conflicting practices and beliefs of the Puritans. In the introduction, he gives what almost seems like a sense of duty to expose these inconsistencies. This presents an interesting aspect to the idea of sin and consequences. While he condemns the sin that occurred between Hester Prynne and Reverend Dimmsdale, he gives the reader this overwhelming sense of sympathy toward them in a way that almost validates them—while condemning their sin. Hester Prynne is often cast aside. She sinned and then suffered the consequences of her actions.
